Hello friends. The Whisper Channel has taken over the airwaves at my house. Also known as the Outdoor Channel, you have to listen closely as most of the conversation is in low whispers while hunters stalk their prey.

Rick has been bow hunting and still waiting to see one worth killing. Sean Tilley brought down a big buck Saturday, nine points I think; would have been ten, but one was broken.

Sean, Madison and Papa Olin Tilley visited with Rick earlier in the week. While Madison built a cabin from Lincoln Logs, the fellows discussed all the finer points of bow hunting, buck rubs and so forth.

I do not bow hunt, but am planning for my second year’s hunt with Daddy’s gun. I think I can stay calm and wait for a big one this time around. Rick took me shopping for my own hunting clothes as last year I wore his coveralls which were at least a foot too long. I found some at yard sales, but they were all too long. Finally found some “short” ones at Wally World so guess I am ready to hunt.

Out of state buyers have told me they will be here to look for a house the first day of deer season. Priorities do kick in and I will have to wait until after the first weekend rush to get in the woods.

Neal’s father-in-law, Billy Hodges, had a birthday on October 15 and was surprised to get a phone call from Doyle Lawson. I don’t think Mr. Lawson sang to him, but did wish him a happy birthday.

We have a lot of good local bluegrass musicians and look forward to seeing many of them at the Shadowrock Jubilee next Saturday, 10/25, at Taney Center. BBQ begins at 4:00 and music is from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. Rick is deciding which of his overalls to wear for the Bib Overall Contest. Thank goodness, it’s too cold for the cutoff ones that he has worn all summer!

There was a wedding shower at Sandy Church on Sunday afternoon for Martin Hodges and his beautiful bride-to-be, Amy Cremeens. Their wedding is coming up in a couple of weeks and that will be another big event to write about.

~picture of Martin & Amy by China Hutch that Neal & LeaAnn made for their shower~

I got a friendly phone call from Carol Roberts Honeycutt who was visiting with her dad, Boyd Roberts, at Bradleyville. After reading about Lone Star and Miss Nellie Clark, she called to tell me that Miss Nellie was her great-aunt. If I understood correctly, Miss Nellie was a sister to Carol’s Grandma, Sue Clark Roberts. Thanks Carol, for the phone call and your kind words.

I missed my Aunt Bonnie Bilyeu at Lone Star and finally caught up with her by phone. She had gone to Sheridan, Arkansas, to visit her sister, Geraldine. Although she hated to miss Lone Star, she just couldn’t pass up the opportunity when Bill and Carolyn Sue Slentz offered to give her a ride to Arkansas.

Rick and I went to see Big Smith play at Silver Dollar City Thursday afternoon and were surprised to see Rick's cousins from Republic, Robert and Wanda Hammond, after the show. We all enjoyed the show and I pressured them into purchasing the Lone Star CD since it has my picture on the cover. Usually we don't see anyone we know at SDC, but this time also saw old friends, Roy and Betty Chapman. They live in Kimberling City now, but we went to church together at Marshfield many, many years ago. I think Neal was a baby, so that was over thirty years ago. On our way out of the city we saw Ken & Georgann Robinson from Edgewater Beach. Just recently we got acquainted with them at the Lone Star Homecoming.

When we got home from SDC, Rick went to bed with a headache and flu aches. He stayed pretty close to home the rest of the week, although was able to get out of bed this morning and hunt for a few hours. I guess riding a 4-wheeler into the woods and sitting in a tree doesn't really take too much energy.

Saturday afternoon I stopped at Bill and Christie's house where there was all kinds of activity. Daddy's pickup was getting new brakes, Christie was cooking and Madison showed me the new playhouse her Daddy had built (she told me it was "adorable") and it was. Marty was there with Tanja and the kids to come later after track meets. Both Vanessa and Dakota are running in cross country meets now and doing very good. Bye for now.

"Trick or Treat"

Trick or Treaters came a week early at our house this week as Erin and Madison were collecting candy tonight. After leaving our house they visited Uncle Jim & Aunt Dawn, then went to visit Colby and residents at Culpepper Place in Branson.
Erin is spending the night with Madison across the hollow at Grandma Christie's.

Dogwood Acres Buck #2

Here is the nice 7 pt Buck that Rick got Wednesday morning with his Crossbow. He was up in his tree stand about 10 minutes when it came along. In less than 2 hours he was back home taking pictures. Now he can clean the bow and hang it back on the wall on "his side of the bed".

What a Deal

I bought gasoline in Christian County for $2.21 a gallon, how nice to fill up my car for $23 instead of $43!! It was even cheaper on up the road, $2.19!

SHADOWROCK JUBILEE

Riding Rick Avenue

Rick's idea of showing company a good time is taking a ride down the trail to his hunting grounds. Cousin Debbie was brave and held on tight especially when climbing up and down the steep parts of the trail.

TREE IN LONE STAR CEMETERY
Many had not seen the tree which had been so mightily struck by lightning a few months ago. With the mess of exploded limbs cleaned up, only these two spikes still stand, casting a thin shadow on what used to be a shady corner of the cemetery.

Jimmie Bilyeu & Kasie Bilyeu Fisher

DOGWOOD ACRES, 10/06/08, ELANE CRUM

Hello friends.

The Lone Star Homecoming will be next Sunday, October 12, beginning at about 10:30 with a morning church service. Lone Star Church of God provided a spiritual foundation for dozens of families over a period of many years. While the Homecoming is a time of reunion among friends and families, it is only fitting that there be singing of hymns and sharing from God’s Word.

Our family had a birthday gathering at Bill and Christie’s home Sunday afternoon for birthday girls, Christie Biggs Kasie Fisher and Abigail Biggs.

Bill grilled melt-in-your mouth pork chops and the rest of us filled the table with vegetables, salads and desserts. Christie said she really enjoyed having everyone over and not having to worry about cooking or doing dishes.

While Abby, Kasie and Christie’s birthdays were 3,4, & 5, our Granny Nettie’s birthday would have been today on the 6th. Granny used to bake a wonderful strawberry cake for birthdays and holidays, so I did my best to make one as good as hers. I used a cake mix, while she probably started from scratch, but they ate every crumb, so it must have been a fair imitation.

Granny, Kasie & Christie...1986??

Jim and Dawn helped BILL, Christie and Sean clean up around the foundation and yard of the old house on Saturday afternoon. The shrubs lining the sidewalk had gotten pretty big, so Brother Jim just used a chainsaw on ‘em. Yep, no messing around with a little ‘ole hedge trimmer when he could use the big stuff.

With the change of seasons and hunting season beginning, I am in the mood to cook…..and EAT! The last big storm blew bushels of apples to the ground in Dupe and Dottie Brown’s yard and I was blessed to end up with several of those. That inspired my recent cooking binge and I ended up with an apple crisp, three apple cakes and several jars of canned applesauce. One of those cakes has gone into the freezer to take to Lone Star next Sunday.

At the Farmer’s Market in Forsyth, I got some beautiful strained honey and a slab of honeycomb from Rick and Mary Hursh. That called for hot biscuits and butter, a marvelous treat. Rick said they will be at Farmers Market on Saturdays, so if we eat this up real fast, I know where to get more.

I, as many of you, will miss hearing from Glenda Day as she has passed the Bradleyville column over to Karen Case. Karen, we know you will do a fine job, but please keep us updated with news from Glenda and make sure she does not get too close to Blackie the Bear. Bye for now.

DOGWOOD ACRES WEEKLY 09/29/08

MEADOWS SCHOOL Built in 1906

Hello friends.

'Twas a weekend of reunions, but I only got to run by Meadows for a few minutes on Saturday morning. It was early with only a few earlybirds there, but I did see Dennis Anderson and his sisters, Doris and Mary Lou. They planned to visit the Keithley Reunion later in the day, but I missed that one.

Front: Jayne Meadows, Doris & Mary Lou Anderson

Back: Leon, AnnaBelle Gideon, Dennis Anderson

Rick did a little hand to hand combat with Lone Star Yellow Jackets while weedeating around their nest in the church yard. He threw down the weedeater and ran, but not before five of them nailed him. His hand and arm were swollen for days, and just now getting back to normal.

After the Bilyeu Reunion I got an email from Mary Lee (Bilyeu) Brown telling me about her daughter's Bull Creek Adventure. Karen and her husband, Mike Coleman, left the Bilyeu Reunion early to go search for Enterprise School. They did find it and were excited about that. They also explored Camp Creek and found what they thought was the place where Mary's dad, Elzy Bilyeu, may have been born. Mary said she can't remember when her Grandpa lived there as that was before her time. Her memories are what I like to call "shared memories" as she had listened to her dad talk about those places. Mike and Karen are going back with their mules so they can ride the area and explore a little deeper.

Many will remember when our daughter-in-law, LeaAnn, traveled with the Gospel singing group, Witness. She and Neal traveled with the group for about five years. Neal ran the sound board and LeaAnn played piano, banjo, guitar, and sang harmony. There will be a Reunion Concert with Witness Saturday, October 4, 6 p.m. at Ava Assembly of God. The Kelly's will also be singing and a love offering will be taken to benefit the Options Pregnancy Clinic of Ava. Witness has been practicing as it has been a few years since they have all been together. We are looking forward to it and hope to see a lot of you there.

While Rick and I were buying mums from Lori Roberts at Bloomers Greenhouse, we saw Rob and Anita Dalton and had a good visit. We meet them on the road every Sunday morning, but are always going opposite directions.

Bill, Christie and Colby Biggs went to Kansas City over the weekend and Bill got to go to a Chiefs game with his cousins, Mark Casey and Tom Biggs. The Chiefs beat Denver, so it was a game worth watching.

Neal and I got to be in church with Herman Rossner Sunday and enjoyed hearing him sing and testify. Herman shared some of his Lone Star memories when he and Grandpa Lloyd Crum were little boys. It is almost birthday time for Herman and he will be 83 years old. Bye for now.
