DOGWOOD ACRES, 01/04/10

Foggy Morning on DAUPHIN Island

DOGWOOD ACRES, 01/04/10, ELANE CRUM

Hello friends. Four days into the New Year and still not committed to any life changing New Year Resolutions. We celebrated New Year’s Eve with the kids, grill on the deck with S’mores and hot chocolate on Dauphin Island. Little Fox cozied right up to the fire with us as we watched neighbor’s fireworks against the blue moon sky.
The sky was clear as a bell early in the evening, but by the time we went outside the moon seemed to be peeking its way through a cloudy path.
On New Year’s Day the kids headed for home so the girls could go to school this week. If we had only known what the future held, they could have stayed a few more days. They drove through Memphis and visited the Peabody Hotel so Ashton and Erin could watch the 5 Peabody ducks walk the red carpet. I am not sure they were especially impressed, but at least they can say they have seen this famous event.
By the time most of you read this, we will be back home, but, meantime we are still hanging out on Dauphin Island. Today’s high temperature was 43 and low tonight expected to be around 19. Wind is howling off the coastal waters all around our beach house.
We made a trip to the “outside world” today, stocked up on a few supplies and had lunch in Foley with Ralph and Renata (Ronni) Vest, who are staying in Orange Beach. It was good to see cousin Ralph again and catch up; we usually see each other at least once a year at the Bilyeu Reunion. Today we laughed about all the ways we are related…enough to almost make one a little silly.
Ralph has been catching some nice fish in the Gulf and gave Rick some fishing tips. Next time we come, Rick will have to bring a heavy duty fishing pole.
While the kids were here last week, we made a trip to Gulf Shores and Foley for some shopping at Tanger Outlet Mall. On that outing we managed to eat pizza, hamburgers, and then topped off the day with seafood at Big Daddy’s Grill on the Fish River near Fairhope. We can thank Karla Schupbach Pennington for telling us about that one.
Truly we have not eaten out much as the island has limited dining opportunities and it is almost 20 miles to a town. On our first day here we made a trip into town for groceries and stocked the shelves and refrigerator with real food like beans, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese , sausage and eggs.
The big bone that Erin found, bleached, then roasted with bacon strips finally pleased Little Fox. She gnawed and chewed at what bit of marrow she could get to, but Rick said it gave her stinky breath and hid it from her. She has plenty of other things to chew on.
On our trip to the mall today Rick found a bargain on a winter coat which he needs badly. There are plenty of coats at home, but he left home wearing overalls and a hoody. He thought it would be warm here but has shivered enough. The only other purchases we made were a booster seat, travel bed, blankie, and diapers….all for the D.O.G., who does not know she is a dog.
Sean and Makaylee have been feeding the dogs and cats at home. We feel really sorry that they are getting out in such horrible weather to do our chores, but will be home in a few days to relieve them.
My nephew, Trent Bilyeu, came home from Myrtle Beach to spend a few days with the family. I saw his picture on Facebook, but am afraid that he will be gone by the time we get home. Bye for now.
