DOGWOOD ACRES, 05/03/10, ELANE CRUM
Hello friends. Saturday was a stay-at-home & work-in-the-yard day. Actually Rick does all of the mowing and weed-eating while my job is flower-beds. Every year I add a few Perennials that do not require much attention. So far this year there are hostas, cannas and others that I do not remember the name of; got them from Betty and Steve Petersen who live down Y Hwy, just past Curtis St. and by Uncle Bill and Aunt Roma’s yellow house. I had stopped to take new listing pictures of the yellow house which is for sale and found Betty working in her flowers. I hardly realized what I was doing, but next thing I knew the whole back of my car was full of pots.
Steve has been balancing turkey hunting and fishing, although I am not sure which was the most productive. Dave Stewart and Bobby Joe Bilyeu had been down for an evening of fishing. As much fun as those three had, I don’t know how they managed to catch any fish.
I also saw Dave’s mom, Edith Stewart, not long ago. I was taking listing pictures of a house in her neighborhood, when she drove by on her way into town. Edith is amazing, 93, I think she told me and still driving anywhere she needs to go.
Saturday evening I visited my neighbors, starting at Justin and Kasie’s. Kasie works nights so was still sleeping, but Justin was working in the garden. Next stop was Jim and Dawn’s, where I found Jim strolling around the meadow looking for wild strawberries; only found a few under the pine trees. From there I went to Bill and Christie’s where only Bill was at home. On my way home, I swung back into Justin’s and said HI to Mike Stenger and Brody who had walked over for a visit. Brody is Joe Allen’s granddaughter and likes visiting Uncle Mike and Aunt Joyce.
Justin and Kasie have new kittens, bringing the cat count at their house up to nine. Finally, someone has more cats than Rick and I! On my last leg home, I glimpsed Ken and Nita Puchta out for a twilight stroll. Ken called our house today to let us know they have two kittens that are ready for homes. One is a white female bob-tail with blue eyes and the other is a tortoise shell male with a long tail.
After visiting all the neighbors and finally getting to bed Saturday night, seemed I had barely dozed off when the phone rang. It was well after midnight when a ringing phone usually means bad news and I hated to answer. Guess it was a good thing as a young lady we know had run out of gas on a sharp corner close to our house. Her husband was on his way with a gas can but we got there first with enough gas to start her car and get it out of the road. She pleaded with me to not put her name in the paper, so unless someone pays me very well, I will respect her wishes. She was not doing anything illegal or immoral, just on her way home from work and had failed to check the gas gauge.
I talked to Aunt Wanetta Keithley and got to hear about that sweet great-grandson, Brody LeRos Baker, born on Jan. 17. Brody weighed 9 lbs, 7.5 oz and I do believe he has the whole family wrapped around his little finger.
Little Fox has been working in the yard with Rick all day and they are ready to hit the hay now. We just learned that she has been socializing when we are gone. Mike Stenger said she came to his house to play with Dow and Helen Thompson’s cat, also visiting at his house. He was good enough to bring her home and we are more watchful about her time outside.
Ken Puchta is also taking care of neighborhood cats. The tortoiseshell mama who had kittens in his shed belongs to Justin and Kasie. For three weeks he has also been visited by a gray cat which turns out to belong to Bob and Rhonda Bowman. Fortunately our neighborhood watch program usually gets most of our animals back to their rightful owners. Bye for now.
