DOGWOOD ACRES, 07/05/10

DOGWOOD ACRES, 07/05/10, ELANE CRUM

Hello friends. Well, I have taken a break from writing; seems that when time to write came each
week, I was totally tired and could not make myself focus on putting enough words together to make
any sense.
Rick has been gone to his mom’s now for over a week and I thought I would get a lot done. I
guess I have, but has been longer hours working and even fewer hours for home chores. Little Fox
went with him, so with the two of them gone, the house has been unbelievably quiet. They took my
car and I have been driving his pickup. His pickup is easy to drive, but hard to climb into. Just
climbing in and out of it all day wears me out.
He and Little Fox are having a good time in Oregon. When not hanging out with Betty Jo, they
go visit his twin brother, Roger, who lives just a few miles from town. Roger has a pretty place
in the country and Little Fox had a lot of freedom to run out there. Her freedom came to an end
when she discovered the exotic rooster and managed to get a mouthful of black feathers.
She plays with the cats at home and they don’t mind when she drags them around by the fur of
their neck, but she had never seen a rooster.
Aunt Barb was there from Portland this weekend and a bunch of them drove up to the mountains and
hiked in to visit the waterfalls. Rick is taking some pictures, but unless he can get someone
else to email them, I will have to wait.
We had a new litter of Treeing Feist puppies here on July 1. Sweet Trixie had 8 puppies, six
are red like her and two are white with spots like Bud and Pete, either of which may be the proud
PaPa. They are cute little things and Trix is a good mama, so not much is required from me.
After work Saturday evening I stopped at Bill and Christies for the Biggs Family fish fry.
Bill, Sean, Dakota and Andrew have been hauling in a few fish and there was plenty for all.
Christie made a fresh blackberry cobbler, Anita brought her trademark Cornbread Salad and Sabrine
brought a yummy spinach dip.
There was also a fresh batch of peach peel jelly from the peaches that Sean had picked last
week. Christie enlisted help from the grandkids in getting the peaches peeled and frozen, then had
stayed up ‘til 3:00 a.m. boiling down the peach peels like Mother used to for jelly.
The bear came back to Bill’s bees and knocked them over again, so he gave up and had Neal come
get them. It was really a heavy hive, took Neal and Sean both to get it up in the truck. Now that
the feed source is gone there, I am watching my back a little closer here at our house.
On my way to the office Saturday I stopped at Ken and Nita Puchta’s where the neighborhood
coffee group was meeting. They had tables and chairs set up on the big deck that wraps around the
log house. Ladies were on one corner and men on the other with food and coffee in between. There
was lots of chatter on both sides, but I really think the men were the loudest.
A couple of weeks ago, I was coming home late one night and saw a Mama cat and three little
kittens crossing the road from Puchta’s and headed towards Daddy’s barn. I kidded Kasie about the
illegal immigrants that were sneaking over there under cover of night. Sure enough when I was at
the barn a few days later, there was two black Mama cats and more kittens than I could count.
Justin and Kasie have a pretty garden this year. They have made raised beds in the spot where
Daddy always put out his garden. The beans are vined up on a piece of woven wire, which,
apparently, is very convenient for the deer. Justin said the deer have eaten more than they have.
I took Uncle Bill and Aunt Roma to Springfield last week for a Dr. Appointment. It was a
morning appointment so we got back to Spokane about lunch time and ate at the Gateway Café. After
leaving there, we drove to Spokane Cemetery and past the school, on down the highway past Reno
Springs Road and past the Windy City turnoff before heading back home to Branson West. Those
places hold a lot of memories for Aunt Roma and I was glad we could travel that road together.
Anna Belle Dalton is still in the hospital, it has been 4 weeks now and seems that one thing
after another keeps her there. Joyce is staying close by her side and the day I was there, her
sweet nieces, Barbara, Gay Lea and Anita Kay came for a visit. I just talked to Mike and they are
hoping she can come home this week.
Lois Andela asked me to remind her relatives that the Boyd Family Reunion will be Saturday, July
10, at First Baptist Church Forsyth on Hwy 76E. Don't forget it! Bye for now.

The pictures from the hike turned out great!!!! Maybe a rooster is just what you need to keep Little Fox in check. :)
