DOGWOOD ACRES, 07/26/10, ELANE CRUM
Hello friends. Our vacation with the Crum Family in Oregon has ended and we are all working our way back into regular routines. As you know, Rick and Little Fox drove out a couple of weeks ahead of the rest of us. By the time we got there, they had settled nicely into a routine of long talks with Grandma Betty and long walks around Cottage Grove.
Neal, LeaAnn, Ashton, Erin and I flew from Branson to Portland where Rick and his twin brother, Roger, picked us up at the airport. It was late evening, but we still got to Grandma Betty’s in time to eat clam chowder before bedtime. We loved flying in and out of Branson and even got an extra day’s vacation because of some snafu with the airline.
Rick’s three brothers and hordes of nieces and nephews live fairly close to Grandma Betty so there was always little ones around for us to play with. Roger’s daughter, Angela, brought her camper to a nearby campground for the week. That made it easier for her and her daughters to visit with us and was also a fun place for a family cookout on Saturday night. Nearby Dorena Lake and Row River provided fishing and swimming opportunities for those who had lots of energy to burn.
There was the Saturday Market in Eugene and a hike to Spirit Falls, photo shots at one of Cottage Groves famous covered bridges and Friday morning yard sales. As usual, it took an extra suitcase from The Goodwill to get everything back home.
Sean, Makaylee and Madison picked me up at the airport and I enjoyed hearing about Makaylee’s “Beary” wild blackberry adventures. She is quite an entrepreneur, taking fresh berries, hot cobblers and jellies to the Farmer’s Market in downtown Forsyth.
Just a few days after Rick left, Trixie had a big litter of puppies. By the time I got home, all seven had their eyes open and can raise quite a racket. I am afraid they will crawl through the wire and get carried off by a bear.
I don’t think I have told you about the bear that visited our dog pen and growled outside my window in the middle of the night. It raised quite a ruckus trying to get to the dog feed and dogs just about went crazy. There was nothing I could do, except make sure my doors and windows were locked. The dogs finally settled down, I was dozing back into dreamland when, apparently, the bear made another circle, rousing the dogs back into a barking frenzy.
It makes a nightly circuit just about the time that I have gone sound asleep. I don’t know where it finds food, maybe nowhere. Perhaps that is why it visits Kaylee’s wild berry patch.
Pearl Bilyeu passed away while I was gone, but I did get home in time to attend the visitation. She was a sweet lady whose life was a wonderful legacy for her family.
Adrian and Glenette Brown and grandson, Dustin McIntosh, recently returned from a trip to Colorado. It was the 47th time that Adrian and Glenette had taken that trip. Dustin has some catching up to do if he gets there 47 times but he is still young.
My dad’s first cousin, Roy Dean Bilyeu, is in the hospital and critically ill with cancer. It is hard to see those we love struggle with such pain and there is a limit to what the doctors can do to make it bearable. Roy and Charlotte’s church is hosting a benefit to raise funds to help with his medical bills. It will be Saturday, July 31, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Aurora Community Center at the corner of Church and Washington. The flyer says: “Join us for food, auction, raffle and live music with family and friends”. Donations of baked goods and auction items are welcome.
Neal and family picked up a cousin, Tristin Crum, at the Branson Airport. He is going to stay for three weeks and experience life on the farm with his hillbilly girl cousins. They will make sure he has fun and makes loads of country memories. Rick and Little Fox are on their way home and should slide in midweek. Bye for now.
