DOGWOOD ACRES, 08/15/10, ELANE CRUM
Hello friends. August is half over, school has started, and we are bracing ourselves for the cool front expected this next week. I wonder if it is too soon to switch my closet from summer to fall clothes.
We had a busy week filled with family, fun and work, although not all necessarily in that order. When there is work, the other things have to be worked in to keep a balance. Rick’s great-nephew, Tristin, has been here for three weeks and we have had some fun outings with him and Neal’s family. He has been staying with Neal and LeaAnn who are young enough to keep up with the three energetic young people.
Rick and I could never keep up on a fulltime basis, but have taken it in small doses with recovery time in between. We went to see The Legend of Kung Fu in Branson one night, played in Swan Creek another evening and spent a hot afternoon exploring the Lone Star Community where Grandpa Lloyd grew up. Sunday dinner was at PaPa and Granny Hodges where we all ate like hard-working farm hands. Martin and Bill made homemade ice cream, yummy with fresh picked peach cobbler.
Tristin went home on Monday and still has three or four weeks of summer vacation before his school starts. It was fun sharing our hillbilly culture with him and he showed PaPa Bill how to text on Mary Lou’s new cell phone.
In our front yard we have an old fashioned milk can that covers the opening to our well. Beside it is a hydrant with multiple water hoses for watering flowers and dogs. It has always been there and we think nothing of it, but Tristin asked if it was a moonshine still.
I have never seen a still, but have heard a few stories which I may share in the future.
Jim and Dawn came over about dusk Saturday evening to visit Dawn’s puppy. She will be taking it home soon, but Rick wanted to give shots first. Jim gave Dawn a pretty red dog collar for her birthday, so apparently he is accepting this new puppy into the family circle.
We have a blast watching the puppies as they are still small enough to wiggle beneath the kennel fence to run and play with Little Fox. It won’t be long before their fat little bodies will not fit and then it is time for them to go to new homes. If you need a good squirrel dog, give us a call anytime, day or night.
Cousin Glenette Brown asked me to remind Bilyeu family far and wide that it is almost time for the annual Bilyeu Reunion. It will be on September 18, 11:30-3:30 @ Spokane High School. Bye for now.
