Dogwood Acres Weekly-08/30/10

DOGWOOD ACRES, 08/30/10, ELANE CRUM

Hello friends. It has been a rough week for the pups. After thinking Malcolm was gone for good last week, Jim and Dawn fixed him a fine dog pen. He did not like being confined, dug out under the gate and went hunting with Buddy, Jim’s Golden Retriever. Talk about Mutt and Jeff, they are truly opposites in size and we are afraid that the little guy will not keep up with Buddy’s long legs. Now, on the other hand, we have the other six running all over our yard and not likely a one of them will get lost. I may be going to an animal swap meet sometime real soon.
Just as Jim and Dawn were getting things situated for the puppy, someone brought them 3 chickens. They have worked all weekend transforming a portion of the dog pen into a chicken pen. If the dogs do not return, they may have an extra pen for the chicks. The little hen is already laying so will pay for her keep with several eggs a week.
We had a family outing Friday night, going to see our Big Smith cousins play at Branson Landing. Rick picked me up at work and we got there at 4:30 and found a good spot for our chairs near the front. Neal, LeaAnn, Ashton, Erin and two of their friends joined us. Kasie and Justin sat with us. She had stayed in town after getting off work at the V.A. Clinic and Justin came from the Harley Davidson Store which he manages at The Landing. Hosea and Debbie, Robin and young Molly also joined our corner so we felt like we had a good family representation. We got pretzels and soft drinks from Colby at Auntie Anne’s Pretzels…absolutely delicious!
I heard the boys say that Bob and Connie, Rick and Gay and Aunt Betty were there but we never saw them amongst the 2 or 3 thousand people that must have been there. While Rick held our seats, I walked down to Belk’s and met Steve and Kathy Keithley-Johnston strolling down the street. They had come to hear the cousins’ band for the first time, hope they found a good place to sit.
Daughter-in-law, LeaAnn Crum, Executive Director of Options Pregnancy Clinic of Ava, will be busy this week with the Clinic’s Indoor Yard Sale. It begins this Thurs @ 8am-5pm and Fri. 8am-5pm. The clinic is located at 201 N. Jefferson in Ava. They have a good assortment of miscellaneous items and all sizes of clothes and would love to see everyone. If you are like me and don’t get to Ava often, be sure to stop by Ava Drug and get a nickel ice cream cone!
Rick got up early Saturday and went to coffee at John and Marguerite Sloan’s house. Marguerite is a lovely hostess, always makes gooey cinnamon rolls that Rick raves about, but I missed out. After a week of early mornings and late nights, I took advantage of the opportunity to sleep in. Rick said their daughter was there, visiting from Kansas, and taking lots of pictures of the coffee club activities.
Shopping at Staples last week, I saw Marlena Stuart Bach, and her pretty little girl, Hannah. I was surprised to see them as they have been living in China where her husband works with Cirque de Soleil
I called Rick’s cousin, Debbie Lathrope, Sunday afternoon. She is looking forward to seeing friends and family at the Lone Star Homecoming, coming up soon on October 10.
Bye for now.
